About This Role
As an International Student Engagement Ambassador with Study NSW, I welcomed newly arrived international students at Sydney Airport's International Student Welcome Desk, guiding them through their essential first steps in Australia.
What I Did
Key Responsibilities
- Airport Welcome: Greeting students at Sydney Airport arrivals, offering friendly guidance on transport, accommodation, and next steps
- Information & Support: Providing essential information about student services, Opal cards, SIM cards, and university resources
- Cultural Connection: Creating a warm first impression of Sydney for students from diverse backgrounds
- Problem-Solving: Helping students navigate common challenges like lost luggage, transport options, and accommodation queries
- Collaboration: Working with Study NSW representatives and fellow volunteers to ensure smooth operations
A Typical Shift
Each shift at the Welcome Desk was unique. I'd greet students as they came through arrivals—often tired, nervous, and overwhelmed. A simple smile, a "Welcome to Sydney!", and some practical tips about getting to their accommodation made a huge difference.
The best moments? Seeing the relief on students' faces when they realised they weren't alone, and that someone was there to help them navigate their first moments in a new country.
Skills Developed
- Interpersonal communication across cultures
- Problem-solving under pressure
- Empathy and active listening
- Cross-cultural competency

Impact & Reflections
Coming to Sydney for my Master's degree, I understand firsthand the challenges international students face. This role allowed me to give back by making others' transitions smoother than mine was.
30 hours of volunteering at the Welcome Desk helped hundreds of students start their Australian journey on a positive note.
