I volunteered with the Red Cross Society at Newtown Mission. The aim of this activity was to support the local community by organizing donated clothes, ensuring they are accessible and neatly arranged for those in need.
Newtown Mission is a community support initiative run by the Australian Red Cross, providing essential services to vulnerable community members including clothing, food, and support services.

What I Did
While volunteering with the Red Cross Society at Newtown Mission, I assisted in organizing and arranging donated clothes.
Key Activities
- Sorting & Folding: Physically lifting, folding, and sorting clothes based on their sizes
- Organization: Ensuring clothes were neatly presented and accessible for those in need
- Collaboration: Engaging and interacting with other volunteers, including fellow UTS students
- Learning: Discovered the history of the church where the event was held, adding meaningful context
Alongside the hands-on tasks, I had the chance to engage and interact with other volunteers, including fellow UTS students, which made the experience more collaborative and enjoyable.
Reflections & Learnings
What I Learned
This experience taught me:
- The importance of teamwork and attention to detail
- How small actions like organizing clothes can contribute to a larger social cause
- The physical effort required in such initiatives
- A greater appreciation for the volunteers who consistently support community services
Meeting new people and understanding the mission of the Red Cross Society broadened my perspective on community engagement.
Impact
Being part of an organisation that directly supports people in need was both grounding and motivating, reinforcing my commitment to ongoing community engagement.
